Ok, we are three days out from the 83rd Annual Academy Awards and it took me forever to get my picks nailed down. I’ve listed each nominee along with their number of previous nominations and wins, where applicable (for acting categories I’m counting both leading and supporting nominations). Let’s dive in… Unless of course, The Academy feels that Annette Bening is “due”. I don’t think she is with this particular role. Julianne Moore had the more compelling character in The Kids Are All Right. You could have substituted Marcia Gay Harden in Bening’s role and had the same movie… Melissa Leo and Jackie Weaver cancel each other out for playing manipulative matriarchs preying on their kids and putting the “D” in dysfunctional. Its a question of which do you prefer Leo’s Southie or Weaver’s Aussie brand of crazy…
Last Sunday, hip-hop marketing executive Steve Stoute took out a $40,000 ad in the New York Times calling out the Recording Academy (NARAS) for being out of touch with the mainstream and failing to give Grammy awards to such hipper acts as Eminem and Justin Bieber. What Stoute fails to understand is that the Grammys, like the Oscars and the Emmys are peer achievement awards. If the respective academies turned their highest honors into sales contests then Sam Worthington would have a Best Actor Oscar, NCIS would have an Emmy for Best Drama, with Mike and Molly taking home the Best Comedy Emmy. None of that will EVER happen.
