I didn’t think anything would make me like Jim Lee’s redesign of the Wonder Woman costume that debuted last summer in Wonder Woman #600. Until now. Its not enough that rumors are swirling about Hollywood that David E. Kelly’s Wonder Woman pilot for NBC is a weird hot mess of Ally McBeal, Diana Prince, and corporate boardrooms.
But to generate press they’ve put the star, Adrianne Palicki, into the new costume. Its an alternate take on Jim Lee’s costume. Where Jim had a lot of leather with the pants and the jacket, the TV pilot is going for a lot of skin tight latex.
I’m sure that latex fetishist are excited– but it looks a bit cartoony. I think nobody gave Lynda Carter’s uniform grief, because it was the 1970s (with the Bicentennial we were used to seeing stars and strips on EVERYTHING) and its what was in the comic book. At least Jim Lee’s leather biker look was an attempt to make a believable costume.
This neon latex fashion disaster highlights the fact that Adrianne Palicki is pretty girl, but she’s no Amazon. She’s so much better than that rumor five or six years ago that Mischa Barton was being considered. The mythology and beauty of Wonder Woman is that she “could stop a bullet cold” and kick any man’s ass.
I believed that Lynda Carter could easily kick ass. The Wonder Woman of the 1990s, Lucy Lawless as Xena– same thing a gorgeous actress with an athletic build. So in my opinion we’ve got two strikes against this new show, David E. Kelly and this lousy costume.
