It was a slow day at the office, so Holly and I debated the merits of the final episode of HBO’s Big Love via text message. The middle part of the conversation was about Pasolini’s Salo and how Paolo Bonacelli looks like Gerard Butler with a beard. But that’s not important right now. Big Love’s finale was a disappointment.
Holly (Mar 20, 2011 6:44 PM):
Bill is such an asshat!
Geppetto (Mar 21, 2011 9:50 AM):
Barb is a preacher, Nikki remains a bitch but can talk to her daughter, Margene goes sailing, Bill finds that women can do more than have babies– and dies.
Holly (Mar 21, 2011 9:51 AM):
Yup. That about sums it up. Bill and his family can only reach their potential with Bill dead.
Geppetto (Mar 21, 2011 9:56 AM):
Bill’s sepia tone flashback? Had they been building to that? Being gunned down was a bit predictable, sure glad the life insurance paid out.
Holly (Mar 21, 2011 9:58 AM):
Earlier in the season he had a dream/vision of Brigham Young’s wife? And his mother as younger and sane at a party.
No, it was Joseph Smith’s wife.
Geppetto (Mar 21, 2011 10:07 AM):
So Bill reaches spiritual contentment by seeing himself as the ‘son’ of the prophet. As a plot point it kind of weakens his newfound respect for women.
Holly (Mar 21, 2011 1:36 PM):
Speaking of great big crocks of shit… I’ve been reading comments from the writers of Big Love how the ultimate message was Bill is a martyr and the survival of a strong family.
Geppetto (Mar 21, 2011 1:41 PM):
Bill was a narcissist with a Jesus complex, who put getting his rocks off above the health and safety of his family.
Holly (Mar 21, 2011 1:44 PM):
He kept babbling about some grand plan but never consulted his wives then got pissed when Barb sells her car?
Geppetto (Mar 21, 2011 1:46 PM):
He was a control freak who could never keep it together. He couldn’t be happy with the stores, his wives, his kids, he was a greedy f*ck and it got him killed
Holly (Mar 21, 2011 1:48 PM):
Had he stopped with store #2, or the casino, he would still be alive. He had to die to keep this myth of family conquering all. If he lived Margene would have stayed but been miserable and Barb would eventually leave him.
Geppetto (Mar 21, 2011 1:54 PM):
Absolutely, Barb is the sane one. She put her immortal soul at risk so Bill could invoke crazy Mormon bonus pussy laws in her house.
Holly (Mar 21, 2011 1:55 PM):
Crazy Mormon bonus pussy? Brilliant.
End.
