Last Sunday, Christian Hernandez decided that he was fed up with his job. You can almost hear the strains of the Johnny Paycheck classic, Take This Job and Shove It– if it were played by a Mariachi band. You see, Mr. Hernandez was matador and he decided that it was time to fold ‘em… during a bullfight at the Plaza Mexico in Mexico City.
How does a matador hand in his resignation? He dropped his red cape and ran from the charging bull, then vaulted over the protective wall at the side of the ring as the crowd booed. Hernandez was briefly persuaded back into the bullring but gave up before coming face to face with the half-ton beast and skulked from the ring a second time. He might have been having flashbacks to when he was badly gored in the leg several months ago.
Hernandez was then arrested following complaints by organizers that he had breached his contract. He was later released after paying a fine. Some in the media called him a coward. In his defense he said, “There are some things you must be aware of about yourself,” he added, “I didn’t have the ability, I didn’t have the balls, this is not my thing.”
Kudos to Hernandez for realizing that he’d lost his nerve. And I’d like to see all the knuckleheads who called him a coward get out there in the ring and take a charge from a bull. Let’s see how long they last.
