The Europeans seem to have the most descriptive road signs in the world. Last month we saw that the Romanians had a road sign to warn of drunks crossing the road; now from Northern Italy, the province of Treviso has a road sign warning motorists of hookers.
The red-bordered triangular sign shows a scantily-clad woman carrying a handbag stating ‘Attenzione Prostitute’. Motorists and pedestrians alike have complained that the sign is ‘confusing’, saying they don’t know what it means.
Local motorist, Dino Vezino, 34, said as much: “I was driving in to work and saw this sign and had to slow down to get a proper look. I couldn’t believe it – the woman has a mini-skirt and high heels on and very big breasts. I just couldn’t work out what it was for? Does it mean I have to look out for prostitutes crossing or that they are available around here?”
Despite the confusion Giovanni Azzolini, mayor of Mogliano,is determined to use every means to fight the growing number of prostitutes– often transsexuals – who line the streets at night. ‘I will not leave any citizen alone to combat this phenomenon, which has by now surpassed any level of tolerability,’ he said. He added that some motorists were having accidents after being distracted by scantily-dressed hookers. In addition to the new signs, police patrols are being increased. Both prostitutes and their customers face large fines if caught.
