I would really like to take South Carolina seriously as a state.  But I can’t.  Part of it is the Mark Sanford thing.  Some of it stems from silly legal things like taking forty-nine years to ratify Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, guaranteeing women the right to vote.  The state legislature didn’t think it was a good idea in 1920 and waited until 1969 to get with the program.

Which I guess makes them really proactive with this one: South Carolina has passed the “Subversive Activities Registration Act“.  The Act requires that, “every member of a subversive organization, or an organization subject to foreign control, every foreign agent and every person who advocates, teaches, advises or practices the duty, necessity or propriety of controlling, conducting, seizing or overthrowing the government of the United States… shall register with the Secretary of State.”

So now for the bargain price of a $5 dollar filing fee, the citizens of South Carolina can sleep peacefully knowing that Al Qaeda sleeper cells, AIPAC, the KKK, and other assorted wing-nuts must now register with South Carolina’s Secretary of State and declare their nefarious intentions — or face a $25,000 fine and up to 10 years in prison.

KKK burning a cross

Damn it, Cletus, we're supposed to register.

With the wording in the law, the Teabaggers may have to look over their shoulders if they meet up in South Carolina… by “subversive organization,” the law means “every corporation, society, association, camp, group, bund, political party, assembly, body or organization, composed of two or more persons, which directly or indirectly advocates, advises, teaches or practices the duty, necessity or propriety of controlling, conducting, seizing or the government of the United States [or] of this State.”
