Well, it’s that time of the month when we appreciate someone new. Someone deserving and slightly under the radar, last month it was the fabulous Bill Nighy.  This month, what with Valentine’s Day around the corner and all, we’ve decided to salute Colin Firth. Because nothin’ says lovin’ like a guy in a wet shirt. If you haven’t seen the 1995 television version of Pride and Prejudice with Mr. Firth then you have no idea what I’m talking about.

As Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice

As Mr. Darcy in Pride and Prejudice

Colin Firth always manages to be likable even if the movies aren’t. He’s the guy in so many romantic comedies that is neither the lovable manchild, Seth Rogan, who, I might add will never appear in this column, nor is he the unapproachable guy. He’s the guy who’s not quite cool but always clever.  He appreciates the fact that he’s the guy with the stick up somewhere on his person but can laugh about it.

Here are some of our favorite Colin Firthy bits.

Valmont - This 1989 watered down version of Dangerous Liaisons was boring but he made even Valmont seem more a charming rouge than all out predator.

Pride and Prejudice (1995) – What can I say. Colin Firth IS Mr. Darcy. Hell, Helen Fielding created a character called Darcy (for her Bridget Jones novels) based on his portrayal of Mr. Darcy only to be played by him as well in the films. That makes him Darcy squared or something, maybe cubed.

The English Patient – Here he was the betrayed husband and cause for everything going to hell. To be fair, he wasn’t a bad guy he just wasn’t Ralph Fiennes or even the dude from Lost.

Bridget Jones or would that Joneses - Colin Firth playing Mark Darcy inspired by Colin Firth playing Fitzwilliam Darcy, which we have already covered. Not even Hugh Grant’s floppy hair could deter from the Colin Firth charm. Sometime the good guys do win.

You don't have to have starred in this movie to be appreciated by us, but it helps

Love Actually – Brilliant ensemble cast make this movie a joy. Our Colin is once again the likable underdog who loses the girl to his sleazy brother only to find a better one.

Mamma Mia! – Just because a musical does well does not mean a movie should be made. If you must make a movie you should , at least, hire people who can sing. That being said, Colin Firth can not sing, but he knows enough to not sing that much and usually in a group. Good for you Colin Firth.

Firth and Julianne Moore in A Single Man

A Single Man- A departure from his popular romantic leading roles (what we see him do in the States).  He plays a gay university professor grieving through the sudden death of his long time partner.  Its California in the swinging sixties, the sets were done by the same team behind Mad Men, and if he doesn’t get an Oscar nomination for Best Actor later today, than the Academy is blind, deaf, and dumb.  Sure he’ll be going up against Jeff Bridges, George Clooney, Jeremy Renner and possibly Morgan Freeman– but this was an AMAZING performance.

We appreciate you, Colin Firth, as the guy we wish we could date. xxoo
