Parents…I know it seems cool to be “friends” with your kids but some of you need to grow up. In my neck of the woods, four year old Taylor Pugh has decided that he wants to grow his hair out. His school has decided that he is violating the school district policy and needs to cut his hair or continue serving his in-school suspension from pre-kindergarten.

Taylor and Delton Pugh
His parents say he’s growing his hair for charity. I find it hard to believe a four year old has such a philanthropic streak but ok, I’ll bite. Delton Pugh, Taylor’s father, doesn’t think he should force his child to do something if it’s not hurting him or disrupting his education.
This is not a school dress code but the policy of the Mesquite Independent School District which requires that boys’ hair must stay out of eyes, be no longer than below the earlobes or the collar in the back. The district policy states that hairstyles,”designed to attract attention to the individual or to disrupt the orderly conduct of the classroom or campus are not permitted.”
Elizabeth Taylor, (no, I’m not kidding), says her son is “an individual. He wants his long hair.” Lady, he’s four. He probably wants to eat ice cream for dinner and never bathe again. He is not your friend. He is your child. He is a child; a very small child and rules are rules.
The district defends its policy, saying “students who dress and groom themselves neatly, and in an acceptable and appropriate manner, are more likely to become constructive members of the society in which we live.”
Mr. Pugh seems to think it’s more than just hair. He claims there are other students with longer hair than Taylor at the school. He says that, “Nobody wants to meet in the middle. It’s all or nothing.”
What exactly would the middle be between let him keep his long hair or make him cut it? He also adds “He’s my son. I love him. I will back him to the end.” Good luck with that, Mr. I Fought the Law–well not exactly the Law. More like I fought my four year old’s school board over his HAIR.

I have never understood a school having a fit because a boy has long hair. But get used to it. I dealt with this issue for years when my son was young. You can’t win. Be glad at least he doesn’t have wear school uniforms.
