What’s the best way to separate a fool from his money? Make a crazy bet that appeals to his sense of machismo and have losing that bet end up in serious injury or death. Which of course makes it easier to collect on such a bet.
In Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, these simple rules are being followed as some motorists are playing a death-defying game on the city’s streets known as ‘Russian Road Roulette’. According to Bulgaria’s chief prosecutor’s office, the craze started last summer and it involves motorists speeding through red lights at busy intersections late at night. The rules reportedly state that to win the bet, the driver must not touch their brakes or crash into a pedestrians, other cars or motorcyclists.
Bulgarian officials say that up to 5,000 euro ($7,300) are being staked on some runs and authorities are now keeping a close eye on some of the roads being used for the game. This is not always possible, however, as often races are organised on short notice by text message.
I couldn’t find any pictures from Bulgaria, but I did find photos of the results of bad driving in Eastern Europe… yup these are people driving normally without cash on the line.

The most common cars and participants reportedly involved in Russian Road Roulette are young males in their 20s driving SUVs. In June two people died after a motorcyclist crashed into a crowd watching on Sofia’s ring road. These fools think the video game Burnout is supposed to be real.
