So last week, Holly opined on a public service announcement from the town of Leister.  They had a rather dramatic way of letting teens know that teen pregnancy isn’t all that its cracked up to be.  Come to find out that dramatizing health issues is their stock and trade in Leister as evidenced by this video about chlamydia.

What is wrong with Leister or rather what is right with it? Here we can’t mention “sex” to school aged children without a lawsuit or some holier than thou type wanting to censor everything. Over there in the U.K. its out in the open- in stark terms.  And this incident in Ramona, California just goes to prove my point:

The ACLU is demanding that school officials apologize to a sixth-grade student who was not allowed to present her report on slain San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk during class time.

Instead, the principal sent letters to parents giving them the option of not allowing their child to listen to the presentation.  Officials cited the school district policy requiring that parents be notified before any classroom instruction about sex, AIDS or “family life.”

About half the class received permission and listened to the report, which was given during lunch hour rather than regular classroom time like other students’ reports, the ACLU said.

The sixth-grader at Mt. Woodson Elementary School said she decided to do a report on Harvey Milk after seeing the movie “Milk,” starring Sean Penn. Milk was one of the first openly gay elected officials in the U.S., although his political legacy is not restricted to issues of sexuality.

Its a sixth grader giving a report on a historical figure.  She didn’t ask to bring in the Kama Sutra for show and tell. Sure the National Health Service folks in Leister are over the top, but how else are you supposed to get kids’ attention these days.  I’d rather kids know more about the topic than be sheltered, completely ignorant and getting on like a bunch of monkeys.
