The Farrelly brothers are planing to do a Three Stooges movie. If the casting gods align, a bowl-cut Benicio Del Toro will be sticking his fingers in the eyes of a puffed-up Jim Carrey, while a frowsy-haired Sean Penn watches on in Bobby and Peter Farrelly’s update of The Three Stooges.

Your 21st Century Stooges

Your 21st Century Stooges

Umm.  Why?  Do we really need two Oscar winners (Del Toro, Penn) and a Golden Globe winner (Carey) in the roles of Moe, Larry, and Curly?  Reportedly its not a biopic (Walk The Line, Ray, etc.)  These guys are going to be the Stooges.

I’m not really a big believer in sacrilege (I loved the reimagined Battlestar Galactica, I suffered through Brian Michael Bendis’ endless and pointless crossovers in the Marvel Universe, I like Concrete Blond’s version of Everybody Knows); but you have to draw the line somewhere.  I don’t doubt the talents of the Farrelly brothers (although IMHO their greatest film is Kingpin).  Why remake something that was and still is comedy gold.  And I say this as a person who is not a huge fan of the Stooges.  I prefer the Marx Brothers.  They were much more subtle and kings of the double entendre.

The Stooges are more like a comedy sledgehammer, while the Marx Brothers employed the rapier– but I digress.  Sure in a pitch meeting this might sound good, but I’m sure the Battlefield Earth, Waterworld, and Howard The Duck sounded good too.
