It’s a merry Christmas for French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his lovely wife Carla Bruni-Sarkozy.  The professional model and pop singer turned First Lady, was seeking 125,000 euros in court damages from Pardon, a fashion chain that sold purses emblazoned with a nude picture of her—without her permission.

Last week a French court decided that, “The unauthorized use of the image of Carla Bruni caused her moral and economic damage.”  The court then awarded her 40,000 euros  or $57,500.  The founder of Pardon, Peter Mertes, said that 10,000 of the bags had been produced and that the court ordered that the remaining stock of 5,500 be destroyed.  Mertes is said to be seeking an appeal to the ruling.

We here at Jobseekers of America think that Carla should have let her lawyers handle her husband’s last lawsuit.  President Sarkozy failed twice last November in his legal attempts to ban sale of a voodoo doll made in his image.  Although to his legal team’s credit, on the second attempt they were able to get a ruling that forces the manufacturer of the dolls to include the following warning in each package, “It was ruled that the encouragement of the reader to poke the doll that comes with the needles in the kit, an activity whose subtext is physical harm, even if it is symbolic, constitutes an attack on the dignity of the person of Mr. Sarkozy.”  C’est la vie.
