This week in Schadenfreude…
From German Schadenfreude, from Schaden (“‘damage, harm’”) + Freude (“‘joy’”)
Noun.  A mischievous delight in the misfortunes of others.

It is expected that sometime Monday, New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress will turn himself into the NYPD.  Why is Mr. Burress turning himself in?  He is up on possible charges of weapons possession and reckless endangerment.  It seems that Mr. Burress was hanging out a Manhattan nightclub last Friday night and a shot was fired… in his pants.  I’ll let the NY Post pick up the story:

“Burress arrived at the club with teammates Antonio Pierce and Derrick Ward around midnight, and was allowed to bring his weapon inside after going through a metal detector and being frisked, sources said.

A short time later, as he was being escorted upstairs to the VIP area, the gun became loose in his waistband and a round went off. He was shot through the same injured thigh which had already kept him out of yesterday’s 23-7 victory over the Washington Redskins.

Burress refused medical care at the club and left with his teammates, turning up two hours later at New York Hospital, where he spent the next 12 hours. The hospital and club never reported the shooting to the police.”

So why doesn’t this guy have one or all of the following (1) a permit, (2) a holster, (3) an entourage, (4) basic skills to handle a handgun?  Why does this matter?  The NY Giants are my least favorite NFL team.  Burress was on my fantasy football team in 2001, his rookie year with the Steelers.  I have had a casus belli against Burress since then.  Unclear about the “down by contact rule”, he spiked the ball in celebration after a catch (a catch, not a touchdown).   He was not down, the ball was live and was recovered by a Jaguar defender, for a turnover, who actually understood the rules of the game.  Making millions of dollars in an occupation that requires good hands, Burress has some bizarre issues with, “things that should stay” in his hands.

Good hands? Lousy aim.

Good hands? Lousy aim.
